Speech therapy has a cost - the question is who pays, and whether the state covers any of it. In Poland there are several routes to fund a child's therapy: early developmental support (wczesne wspomaganie rozwoju, WWR), support at preschool and school, help from a public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre at no charge, and services financed by the National Health Fund (NFZ). Separately, we cover the rehabilitation tax relief in PIT - a deduction from your income, not funding for therapy, and not every expense falls within its catalogue. You will not find any amounts in this article - we map the routes and show where to check current rules and prices. Our current consultation and therapy prices are in the consultation price list.
What does speech therapy cost?
There is no single rate for speech therapy - the cost depends on the number of sessions, their frequency and the format of work (consultation, individual therapy, small-group sessions). That is why our articles do not quote amounts: prices change over time, and an outdated number in the text does more harm than good. We keep current rates in one place, in the price list on our site.
The other part of the cost is time: how many sessions a child needs depends on the type of difficulty and the pace of work. The therapist sets the plan after the diagnosis and revisits it as therapy goes on - so you know when to continue and when to wrap up.
Private therapy complements the public routes: it lets you work in a chosen practice and rhythm, with no referral and no statement from a counselling centre required - you book sessions directly at the provider. If some of your child's needs are covered by the routes below, paid sessions can complement them.
Where to find funding: a map of routes
Before you plan a budget, check which of your child's needs the state covers. These routes do not exclude one another - one family can use several at once:
- Early developmental support (WWR) - sessions within the education system for children with disabilities, based on an opinion from a public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre.
- Special education needs statement - support organised at the child's preschool or school.
- Public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre - diagnosis, therapy sessions and parent consultations, at no charge.
- NFZ - speech therapy at providers with a contract, with a referral from a physician.
- Rehabilitation tax relief - a deduction from your income in the annual PIT return for your child's rehabilitation expenses, when the legal conditions are met.
Early developmental support - the route via a counselling centre
Early developmental support is for children with disabilities, from the moment the disability is identified until they start school. A parent submits the application, and the opinion (opinia) on the need for WWR is issued exclusively by an adjudicating panel at a public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre - the centre's help is voluntary and free of charge. We explain how to obtain the opinion, the monthly scope of sessions and how to choose a provider step by step in a separate article: how to obtain the WWR opinion.
Special education needs statement
The second document from the same counselling centre - the special education needs statement (orzeczenie o potrzebie kształcenia specjalnego) - operates within the education system. It obliges the child's preschool or school to organise support: rehabilitation (rewalidacja) sessions and other specialist classes, including speech therapy. In public institutions this help is voluntary and free of charge, so within the statement the family does not pay for sessions organised at the institution. We cover the whole procedure - application, deadlines and appeals - in the article how to obtain a special education needs statement.
Public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre
A counselling centre is not only a place that issues opinions and statements. Public centres also provide direct help: diagnosis, individual or group therapy sessions for children, consultations, workshops and support groups for parents. Getting in touch does not require a physician's referral - a parent's application is enough - and the help is voluntary and free of charge. It is a good first stop when you do not yet know which route fits your child.
Speech therapy on NFZ - referral and exemptions
Speech therapy services are part of the NFZ benefits catalogue, delivered by speech therapy clinics and other providers with a valid contract with the Fund. The type of ownership does not matter: services financed from public funds can be provided by both public and private providers, and an insured patient does not pay for guaranteed services delivered at such a provider.
The general rule is a referral. A speech therapy clinic operates within ambulatory specialist care, and services there require a referral from a primary care physician or another physician working under an NFZ contract. A speech therapist is not on the list of specialists you can see without a referral. There are exemptions, though: a referral is not required, among others, for a patient with a statement of significant disability or a disability statement indicating the need for constant care, or for a child with the right medical certificate for a severe condition. Without a referral or such a document, the service is not financed by NFZ and its cost may be charged to the patient. The full list of exemptions is published at pacjent.gov.pl (link in the sources below).
You will find providers with a current contract in the NFZ search tool “Where to get treatment” (Gdzie się leczyć) - it lists clinics across the country, including speech therapy clinics (link in the sources below).
Rehabilitation tax relief in PIT
The last route works differently: it is not the state paying for therapy, but a deduction from your income. A parent who bears rehabilitation expenses for a child with a disability can deduct part of them in the annual PIT return. The condition is the right document: a disability statement (orzeczenie o niepełnosprawności) for a child under 16, a degree-of-disability statement, or another document listed in the regulations. The WWR opinion and the special education needs statement do not entitle you to this relief - they are education documents, not disability documents.
The catalogue of eligible expenses is closed, and it includes, among others, the cost of rehabilitation or therapeutic-and-rehabilitation treatments. You cannot deduct expenses financed or reimbursed from public funds - for example by NFZ. That is why it pays to plan the routes together: whatever the Fund covers will not come back in your return. You deduct it from your income (or revenue under flat-rate tax), so it lowers your tax - it does not refund the cost - current rules and the full catalogue of expenses are described at podatki.gov.pl (link in the sources below).
Three documents, three different things
Speech therapy consultation in Gdansk
You do not have to decide this on your own. StacjaMowa is not a psychological-pedagogical counselling centre and does not issue opinions or statements - but at a consultation we will look through the documents you already have (opinion, statement, referral) and suggest where to start. We provide speech therapy and pedagogical therapy, and we welcome families from across Gdansk and the area at our practices in Ujeścisko, Gdańsk and Morena, Gdańsk. If you are wondering what the first visit looks like, see the article on preparing for a speech therapy diagnosis.
Key takeaways
- Speech therapy can be funded from several sources at once - WWR, support at preschool or school, a public counselling centre and NFZ.
- Public routes have their conditions: WWR and special education support require a document from a public counselling centre, and speech therapy on NFZ requires a physician's referral, with exemptions for patients holding the right statement or certificate.
- Help from a public psychological-pedagogical counselling centre is voluntary and free of charge - a good place to start when you are unsure which route fits.
- The rehabilitation tax relief in PIT is a deduction from income, not funding for therapy. It requires a disability document for your child, and the classification of expenses should be checked against the current rules.
- Expenses covered from public funds, for example by NFZ, cannot be deducted - so it pays to plan the routes together.

Learn more about this therapyFrequently asked questions
- Is speech therapy on NFZ free of charge?
- For an insured patient, guaranteed services are free of charge if the provider has a valid contract with NFZ - whether it is public or private. A speech therapy clinic operates within ambulatory specialist care, so the general rule is a physician’s referral. There are exemptions, though - some patients and children do not need a referral, and the full list is published at pacjent.gov.pl (link in the sources below). If you have neither a referral nor an exemption, the service is not financed by NFZ and its cost may be charged to the patient.
- Who can issue a referral to a speech therapist on NFZ?
- A primary care physician or another physician working under an NFZ contract. A speech therapist is not on the list of specialists you can see without a referral - that list includes, among others, a gynaecologist, a psychiatrist and a dentist.
- How do I find a speech therapy clinic with an NFZ contract?
- Through the NFZ search tool “Where to get treatment” (Gdzie się leczyć; link in the sources below). It lists providers with a valid contract for a given field - including speech therapy clinics - across the country.
- Do the WWR opinion or a special education needs statement qualify for the rehabilitation tax relief?
- No. The relief requires a disability document: a disability statement (for a child under 16), a degree-of-disability statement, or another document listed in the regulations. The WWR opinion and the special education needs statement are education documents - they are not on that list.
- Does the rehabilitation tax relief cover speech therapy?
- The relief covers expenses from a closed catalogue, including the cost of rehabilitation or therapeutic-and-rehabilitation treatments. The sources this article relies on give only that general category and do not settle how speech therapy is classified, so each expense has to be assessed against the current rules. Expenses financed or reimbursed from public funds, for example by NFZ, cannot be deducted. The catalogue and the rules are described at podatki.gov.pl (link in the sources below).
- How much do a consultation and speech therapy cost at StacjaMowa?
- Current rates are in the price list on our site - we keep them in one place, so they are always up to date. The number and frequency of sessions are set after the diagnosis, based on your child’s needs.
- Can a family use several funding routes at the same time?
- Yes, the routes do not exclude one another. A child can hold both the WWR opinion and a special education needs statement, use support at preschool or school, and attend therapy on NFZ or privately. Just remember that expenses covered from public funds cannot be deducted under the rehabilitation tax relief.
