Muscle relaxant
A device used to support work on masticatory and perioral muscle tension, individually fitted at the clinic

What is the muscle relaxant?
This Frankel-inspired oral device has lateral discs that act like lip bumpers. It sits in the oral vestibule outside the dental arches. It can be used alone or with a bite plate as part of the separate MFS anti-bruxism device.
How it may support therapy
The vertically oriented lateral discs help keep the mouth slightly open, stretching the masseter muscles. The device may support work on cheek and orbicularis oris muscle tension. A physician or a therapist trained in function regulators sets how it is used.
Who it is for
- Increased tension in the masseter muscles and muscles around the mouth
- Brachycephalic facial growth pattern with increased masticatory muscle activity
- Increased tension in the lip muscles and other muscles around the mouth
- Support within myofunctional therapy after a functional assessment
Sizes and fitting
The device comes in six sizes (1–6), with smaller sizes for children and larger sizes for adults. Fitting uses the dental arch circumference between the first permanent molars. The smaller size is used when unsure. A physician or a therapist trained in function regulators selects the final size.
How the device is placed
Step order is in the text; numbers on the images are visual only

1
Prepare
Wash your hands. Check that the device is clean and undamaged. Sit comfortably in front of a mirror.

2
Place in the vestibule
Gently seat the relaxant in the oral vestibule outside the dental arches so the lateral discs rest comfortably. Do not force the device. A correctly fitted size should not cause pain.

3
Check comfort
Check that the device sits stably without causing discomfort to the lips or cheeks. Use it as directed by a physician or therapist trained in function regulators.
Contraindications and precautions
- Do not use in children under 5.
- Warning: keep the device away from heat sources and do not boil or scald it.
- Do not use in dolichocephalic patients, who have a long, narrow facial pattern.
- Do not use a damaged device or a size that causes pain or abrasion.
